Ziyi ‘Zoe’ Wang 王子一
Howdy! I’m Ziyi 👋 I’m a first-year Ph.D. student in Computer Science at Texas A&M University, advised by Prof. Meng Xia in the Dream Lab.
My research builds AI for mutual understanding: helping people understand themselves, one another, and the AI they work with. As AI increasingly mediates how we reflect, communicate, and decide, it risks flattening the very perspectives these processes depend on. I design interactive systems that keep human perspectives visible, from scaffolding self-reflection (CareerPooler) and surfacing diverse needs (StreetDesignAI) to probing what models understand about people (VLMs & Engagement). My work appears at EMNLP, ACL, DIS, IEEE VIS, and AAAI, including a Best Paper at IEEE VIS 2026.
Previously, I was a Master’s student in HCI at the University of Maryland, College Park, working with Dr. Zijian Ding and Prof. Fumeng Yang. I also collaborated with Prof. Yue Zhao, Prof. Xiyang Hu, and Prof. Xiang Yan.

How can AI help people understand themselves and one another, and how can people and AI systems better understand each other?
- Understanding ourselves Interactive systems for reflection and self-development. I study how generative AI can scaffold career exploration, research ideation, and self-representation, helping people externalize and reason about their own trajectories, ideas, and identities. CareerPooler · ResearchCube · Frontend Diffusion
- Understanding one another Computational support for empathy and perspective-taking. Through persona-based multi-agent simulation, persona-aware assessment, and affective visualization, I examine how AI can make diverse needs, emotions, and trade-offs visible to designers and decision-makers. StreetDesignAI · Bikeability · Made to Feel
- Understanding between people and AI Mutual legibility and trust in human–AI interaction. I investigate whether models can infer latent human states such as engagement, how people rely on AI when making decisions, and how model behavior can be made more reliable and safe.
